A sunkissed style at Valonz Haircutters, Paddington
When I stepped into the stunning doorway of Valonz salon, I have to admit I was a little nervous.
Now, I’m no stranger to a hairdressers’ chair. I’ve been privileged enough to sit in some of the most coveted seats in Sydney, but Valonz just looked polished in a way I’d never seen before – and my first impression confirmed it.
The wallpaper is quirky yet striking, the basins are shiny and the whole place is full of trendy accents that remind me a little of a Mad Hatter’s room, without the headache.
I met Christine Rowe, a celebrity stylist, member of the Wella Colour Club, and the lady responsible for some of the most famous locks in the country. She instantly made me feel as though I belonged. I told her I was keen to lighten up my look– not a lot, but I definitely wanted some noticeable highlights. Christine recommended I try Wella Professional Freelights, a freehand highlighting technique that delivers up to seven levels of sunkissed lift, no matter what your hair colour is.
Once Christine got to work, I loved the way she was able to simply ‘paint’ the colour onto my hair, with no need for foils! When I asked her how she was able to do that – without worrying about the colour bleeding onto other areas of my hair – she explained that the innovative formula features polymers that create an adhesive mass, which sticks to where it’s applied without swelling. It was awesome! The advanced formula allowed her to brighten up my base brunette hue at the same time, which was a bonus! Cue selfie.
After what seemed like a really short time later, Christine ushered me over to the basin and applied a toner to my hair to achieve the right level of lift. This was followed by a shampoo and treatment – honestly, is there anything better than a hairdresser’s head massage? As soon as the blow-dry began I could see the shimmery caramel-coloured bits poking through and hitting the light just right. I was hooked!
Once my hair was dry – and rocking some seriously incredibly body - Christine applied Wella Professional LuxeOil to nourish my strands, tame frizz and add shine. This stuff smells amazing – like tropical fruit mixed with marshmallows – and its effect on my somewhat brittle hair was instant. As for the end look, to say I’m satisfied is the understatement of the year. And the salon? It’s got to be my new favourite!
