Jonathan Van Ness' powerful message about ageing
If you’re a big fan of Netflix’s Queer Eye, then JVN will need no introduction.
As for the rest of you, meet Jonathan Van Ness. Aka one of the most charismatic, infectious and pure of heart persons we’ve been lucky enough to share the same space as.
This angel may have been sent to us as the ‘Grooming Expert’ on the hit series, but it’s his hilarious and heartfelt personality that spreads happiness from the screen and beyond.
The man(e) himself was recently in Sydney, not only for his comedy show, but for an event with Biossance; the clean, plant-based brand that JVN himself relies on for his beauty needs.
It was here that beautyheaven was able to capture some of his best words of wisdom, and of course, his beauty secrets…
“I’ve had psoriasis since I was 23 and I think it really affected my confidence”
Jonathan has always had an interest in clean beauty and the power of ingredients, but it was his journey with psoriasis that led him to Biossance.
“I had to kiss a lot of frogs before I found some princes in clean beauty,” he said. “I first starting using Biossance in June 2017 and it was during Season 1 of Queer Eye.”
“My skin doesn't deal well with big changes and in Atlanta I was in such a flare up and everything I was using was not working,” he explains.
“So I started using Biossance and it really calmed my skin down.”
“I use the vegan lip balm as eyebrow gel all the time”
What started as a love affair with the Squalane + Omega Repair Cream (“I use it for everything, it’s like the Windex of My Big Fat Greek Wedding”, $91, Sephora), turned into a full blown romance with plenty of double-duty beauty hacks.
“I use 100% Squalane ($50, Sephora) in my hair ends and beard. If I was going to wash it out then the rose, but for styling the squalane,” says JVN of his beauty routine.
“I use the vegan lip balm ($30, Sephora) as eyebrow gel all the time, the Tea Tree Oil as cuticle oil and something else that I do, that makes me feel like my own version of J.Lo, is put the Omega cream everywhere.”
“But you know, that’s expensive, so I only do it if I’m having a real down day.”
“Ageing is such a gift”
Being so passionate about the beauty industry, Jonathan has strong feelings about the messaging of ageing and hates when he sees or hears people feeling put down by their age.
“One thing that I would see or hear a lot was people making fun of or dreading ageing and I think having experienced loss, I’ve realised that ageing is such a gift,” he says.
“And if you’re being given the gift to learn and grow, why would you not enjoy everything you're experiencing?”
“I think that life is so precious and I don't want to waste it thinking I have to fight an inevitability that's actually beautiful.”

After JVN admitted to using the Omega cream from top-to-toe, Biossance revealed at the event that they are actually coming out with a body collection soon.
Catherine Gore , president of Biossance said “We’re currently working in the lab and everything will be announced soon, [but there will be a] squalane body butter and we’re launching an SPF in about a week. It’s reef-safe and blends down totally clear.”
