How to seamlessly transition your foundation
When the weather starts to change, our wardrobe, diet and weekend activities follow suit. But one thing many of us forget to switch up is our foundation. Similar to open-toe sandals and hot soup for lunch, your foundation won’t look or feel right unless you take seasonal changes into account. So, to rock flawless foundation all year round, follow the transitional tips below.
FROM SUMMER TO WINTER
As you spend less time at the beach and more time indoors, your skin will begin to lose that natural summer glow, so your summer foundation may not match your complexion perfectly anymore. It will continue to lose a little colour as the weather becomes colder and colder, but instead of purchasing a new shade every two weeks, buy a foundation that’s one to two shades lighter (depending on how bronzed you are) right from the beginning. You can get a rough idea of how much lighter your skin will become by looking at other areas that have been covered from the sun longer than your face, such as your chest.
Mix the new, lighter foundation with your original shade to create your ideal colour as your skin changes. We love to use Rimmel London Wake Me Up, Lasting Finish or Match Perfection Foundations for this, as their easy-to-use pump functions mean you can dispense the different amounts you need of each colour without any wastage.
Once your skin has reached its final ‘winter’ colour, you can stop mixing and just use the lighter shade you purchased from the start. By doing this, you’re not wasting money on buying different shades as your skin colour changes AND you get to finish off your bottle from summer. #win
TOP TIP: Write down the name of the shade you’ve been using all summer to save testing again next season.
Lastly, make sure the foundation you choose for winter is hydrating and brightening, as the combination of windy weather, hot showers and indoor heating tends to dry out the skin and leave it looking dull. Rimmel London Wake Me Up Foundation contains a vitamin-rich, moisturising complex as well as peptides to combat the signs of fatigue. It instantly rejuvenates the skin and eliminates dullness for a radiant and glowing finish (no easy feat during cold, drizzly weather). Or if you prefer more natural coverage, try Rimmel London BB Radiance Cream.
FROM WINTER TO SUMMER
Unlike the transition from summer to winter, colour isn’t your major concern this time. It takes more than one weekend for the warmth to return to your complexion - even though it managed to disappear twice as fast! Instead, the first step is ensuring your skin is protected from the emerging sun with SPF. Rimmel London Wake Me Up, Lasting Finish and Match Perfection foundations all contain SPF, so no matter what your skin needs, you’ll be able to find one that’s not only comfortable, but also ticks the protection box.
Once your complexion starts to look sun-kissed, you can start to transition your colours. There are two ways to do this depending on your skin type. If your skin is dry year-round, you can mix your winter Rimmel London Wake Me Up Foundation with a new ‘summer’ shade from the same range, usually one to two shades darker depending on how much your skin loves the sun (or if you check out our top tip above, you’ll already be prepared when it comes to picking a shade!). If you need something that’ll last in that summer heat, try Rimmel London Lasting Finish 25HR Foundation – the formulation is sweat, heat and humidity proof for up to 25 hours.
Once your face has reached its summer colour, you can use your summer shades solely again. Just be sure to blend all the way from your jawline to your neck and decolletage if your body hasn’t had time to catch up colour-wise yet.
TOP TIP: Rimmel London Lasting Finish 25HR Foundation is a great option for summer, as it’s been formulated to feel comfortable on skin while leaving a naturally flawless finish. Plus, you can’t go wrong with a summer foundation that’ll stay put morning to night and won’t transfer or melt off (even after 25 hours!). If you’d prefer even more barely-there coverage for days when the humidity really hits, opt for the Rimmel London BB Cream.
