5 ways to hold on to your summer skin all year round

Brrrr, it’s getting colder. That crisp summer air has officially vanished and it’s time to store those swimmers away and bring out your favourite cosy sweater. But while you're busy wondering how you’ll get through the next few months without any beach time, spare a thought for your summer skin. That beautiful, bright skin that comes so easily in the warmer weather can quickly take a nosedive into dull and dreary territory when the temperature drops.
Thankfully, summer skin is made, not born. You can fake that glowing, bright skin so convincingly that your entire office will think you’ve been jetting off to the Amalfi every weekend. Don’t believe me? Try these top five tips for glowing skin and showcase beautiful, bright skin all year round.
1# Get glowing
A tan and summer skin go together like ankle boots and a change of season. So to kick off our best tips for glowing skin, you can’t go past a natural-looking, sunless tan. But since you’ll be mostly covered up over the next few months, now’s a good time to switch to a more low maintenance tanning regime. Try using a hydrating gradual tanner or take a complete break from tanning every few weeks. While you’re sporting a lighter tan, it makes sense to customise your foundation coverage. Purchase your favourite foundation in a fair shade (your natural colour without a tan) and a tan shade that matches your self-tanner. As your tan fades, mix the two together to create your perfect shade. Do this, and you’ll never be caught out with a streaky face.
2# Vitamin-infused skin care
For skin that’s delightfully dewy, even in freezing conditions, you’ve got to use good skin care. Basic lotions just won’t cut it when the weather is cooler. For bright skin, look for vitamin-infused formulas with ingredients such as vitamin C to revitalise the complexion. And don’t ditch your sunscreen just yet. The sun may be hidden, but it can (and will) still damage your skin. Even when it’s overcast, you still need to wear sunscreens to protect your skin from sun damage and premature ageing. Look for a moisturiser that contains SPF, or wear a separate product over your moisturiser and under your makeup. Since you can never be too careful when it comes to sun protection, look for a foundation with SPF as well.
3# Prep & prime your skin
One of the best makeup tips for glowing skin is to properly prepare your skin before you apply your makeup. When you slap foundation on without prepping your skin first, it will slide off before you’re even out the door. Or worse, settle into any dry or flaky patches. Always leave one minute between applying your moisturiser and your primer, then leave another minute between your primer and applying your foundation. Try the Rimmel London Insta Fix & Go Spray, a quick-drying, non-sticky formula that can be used as both a makeup primer and a setting spray. It only takes a few seconds to spray this primer on your skin so you’re perfectly prepped for summer skin. And the best part? It smells like cucumber. It doesn’t get more summer than that.
4# Brightening makeup formulas
Year-round summer skin should be enhanced by makeup, not masked. Choose a lightweight foundation formula that offers a luminous finish. The Rimmel London Wake Me Up Anti-Fatigue Foundation SPF 20 contains vitamin C to awaken the skin, and radiance pearls for a brighten, healthy glow. The result is a radiant, even finish that banishes even the slightest signs of a dull complexion. It also contains SPF 20 to protect the skin from sun damage. Got dark circles? A list of the best tips for glowing skin wouldn’t be complete without a brightening concealer. Try the Rimmel London Wake Me Up Anti-Fatigue Concealer, which also contains vitamin C and radiance pearls, to illuminate the under-eye area and conceal dark circles. The creamy texture also makes this concealer ideal for covering spots and pigmentation.
5# Don’t powder, spritz
When your skin’s dehydrated, too much powder can end up making even bright skin look dull. Instead, spritz your face with a setting spray to set your makeup and keep it looking fresh all day. The Rimmel London Insta Fix & Go Spray – yes, the same multitasking wonder you used to prime – locks makeup in place for up to eight hours, eliminating the needs for touch ups throughout the day. The addition of cucumber extract helps to revive the skin texture, while giving the spray its refreshing scent. One quick spritz of this setting spray and you’ll have healthy looking summer skin in an instant!

I was really happy to see that Rimmel had a setting spray (I had no idea). The reviews here on BH aren't that great though. I'm on the look-out for an economical setting spray (UD competitive). Any suggestions are gratefully received!

My summer glow went bye, byes a few years ago when I all of a sudden developed an allergy to the sun. What sucked most was I was a beach babe from way back so when my doctor asked me what country I was originally from I almost died of shock. Aussie born and bred, always had a lovely olive complexion and now a few years later I'm losing my natural tan and olive complexion and starting to look white. Sometimes I hate growing older

I feel like I'm the only person that doesn't want glowing skin. Maybe this is because I have pale skin and I'm in my fifties.

My skin always looks its best in winter. Throughout summer I'm always red, blotchy & sweaty. The only differences I make is to use lip balm & hand cream occasionally.

Mine too, misfortune8. My summer skin can't cope with the humidity and neither can I. absolutely NO problems in winter.

Number 5 is a great tip! I never thought to use my setting spray over my liquid foundation, my go-to was always a setting powder but I'll definitely be trying this out.

Dewy forever! Still do not understand why many like that dry face dull look (matte?). Youthful healthy skin has glow. So if one wants to look healthy and youthful....glow baby, glow =D

I'm all about a glowy base! It definitely makes me look much perkier than I should be at 6.30 in the morning!
