How to: perfect the top knot

As someone with long hair, it can be a bit of a drag. Wearing it down means I have frizzy, knotty, sweaty hair to distract me all day.
The solution? A quick and chic updo I can manage without the professionals.
RELATED: Spotlight on: The ballerina bun
#1 Prep it
Work in a mousse on wet hair to give it a firm hold, then blow-dry completely. Try De Lorzeno Elements Motion Styling Mousse - it has a rich, non-sticky texture, and will moisturise and smooth out any flyaways.
#2 Shape it
Gather your hair into a high pony, and fasten with an elastic. Pull your pony through the hole of the Scunci Bun Maker and slide up to the ponytail base. Split your hair into two even sections, and spread it over the bun maker, wrapping the hair around and covering it from sight.
Top tip: Not keen to tangle or damage your hair? Use Scunci Brunette Polybands. They also come in blonde, so you can colour-match your mane.
#3 Secure it
Secure your bun in place with Scunci Bobby Pins and allow parts of your hair to fall loosely. Remember it’s not about creating a sleek updo, but more about that loose, carefree summer style.
Will you try to create the perfect top knot this summer?

I love putting my hair up like this on hot days but I usually don’t have the time. Another way to jazz it up is to tie a ribbon around it.

This looks so cool.
I’ve never had a top knot.
Maybe when I grow my hair a little longer, I'll try it...

I think they are good for at home and if you have long hair like me it's healthier to do a bun than ponytail and get breakaways. Unless the bun is nice and big and messy I don't find they suit my face

Easy to do but the scalp doth hurt.

I don't have hair long enough to do a top knot. But if I do I would only do it when my hair is dirty and can't be bothered to wash it

My hair is so long and heavy that buns never stay in place :( They always keep dropping - it's so annoying!!

My hair is not quite long enough for the bun makers, so close!

My tip for the perfect topknot is not to try. The minute you put effort into it, it comes out looking like some wonky weird thing. However, if you're just throwing it up for a shower, perfection haha.

The best ones are always when you aren't trying too hard. Go figure. A girl I used to go to school with could pull the best ones off with a pencil. I hated her!

It took me forever to figure it out but I can do it now too. Not so great when you forget you have pens in your hair. Not so chic. Ah well. I have a plenitude of pens at home as a result of that phase of my hair life!

Wish I can pull it off. And have noticed if I wear it for a long time (at home only), scalp hurts =0

What a lovely looking topknot. That’s a lot of mousse in the hand though.

Love it, but impossible to achieve with short hair so I'll have to give it a miss.

I need to dig out that bunmaker... I live with topknots but they're always free forming ones.

I do it without the ring but for thin hair it means quite a bit of teasing.
