The unexpected hair tool that’s making a comeback backstage at MBFWA 2018

Hair trends are par for the course at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia (MBFWA), but this was one that we didn’t see coming. When it comes to a hair director’s styling kit, it’s safe to say you’re likely to find certain hair tools such as a hair straightener, dryer and curler. You might even find hot rollers in a few!

But what we didn’t expect to find when we headed backstage at the Karla Špetić MBFWA Resort 19 show was an old styling favourite in Oribe’s Richi Grisillo’s hair kit – the topsy tail hair loop.
Used to create fool-proof ponytail and braid looks (especially in the 90s!), the topsy tail has slipped off the radar for a few years. But now it’s back and with a whole new way to use it.
After giving the hair lift with Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray ($48, adorebeauty.com.au), Richi used the topsy tail to create layers and movement throughout the hair styles. Creating a knotted bun at the back of the head, he took fine sections of the bun and the hair around it into the topsy tail and pulled it through to make the hair look layered throughout the style.
“We’re gathering the hair and just lacing it through the knotted detail to enhance the texture that’s in there,” Richi explained. “A lot of the models had blunt, one-length haircuts, so it creates a grungy layering.”
The result was a stunning, piecey textured knot, which we’ll be copying immediately.
This trick is perfect for anyone who wants to get that messy, undone effect with their hair, but who wants to keep it blunt and structured for the office on Monday morning. If you want to try it out, you can pick up the Scunci Topsy Tail for $9.95.
Have you used a topsy tail before?

I remember buying one of those for my daughters years ago - they never used it.

Growing my own unruly style without doing anything at all !! I'll give this a miss. I have always wanted long straight hair as I have (Now) short curly to frizzy hair, I've tried it long and done up in a bun and or a pony tail even a french pleat but nothing tames it...oh well

Yes I did own one in the 90's. In fact, I still have it. (Hi, my name is Okatko and I am a hoarder). I found that it could be painful to use. I think you can get quite creative with it.

I'm like a few of the other commenters: I can't work out how this hairstyle is done. I own a topsy tail & know how to use it, but I just can't work this style out. Video please?

They are a fab little tool.
Scruchies are back so I wonder when the banana clip is coming back? It was great for my over sprayed and moussed hair, lol.

That’s a blast from the past! I wish a picture of one was included in the article.

Tried that Oribe spray and wasn’t impressed. Left my hair dry and knotty and smells like strong men’s aftershave and clashed with my perfume

I'm not sure what this is to be honest but the look is kind of messy to me so I won't be rushing out to buy one!

I'm sure I still have a topsy tail hair loop somewhere in the depths of my bathroom cabinetry. I'm also sure that they are evil torture devices designed to bring tears of pain to the eye and style disappointment to the heart. Why would anyone decide they need a resurgence?

I have one of those tools somewhere in my stash might have to find it. But to be honest I don't like the hairstyles shown in the pictures in this article. they are too messy and looks like as if they haven't brushed their hair after waking up.

not a fan of I woke up like this, it makes me look like I haven't been to a shower in days... worse when they see me with kids. Passs

Looks nice but still confused as to how it works - would definitely need a video to see.

Me too Dara! I was too scared to use mine thinking I'd make a huge mess and create more knots

I used to do the style by hand, but I like this messier look (2nd pic) more

The basic topsy I can do (with or without the tool) but this look is interesting. A tutorial would be great!

What a new and unique way to use the topsy tail! It was so popular when I was younger but it only created one hairstyle so I didn't get one
