Six ways to maintain a sun-kissed fake tan
I’m not sure who it was, but the human being who invented fake tan is an absolute genius in my books. I mean, one single application of this bronzed goodness can make you feel confident, make your eyes sparkle, make you feel (and look!) slimmer, and even make your teeth look whiter. It’s sheer brilliance.
But a dose of fake tan can only last so long, beauties. Sad, but true. That’s why we’re pulling a few tips and tricks out of our wise sleeves to help you maintain your faux tanned skin for longer. Because at the end of the day, whether you’ve visited the salon for a spray or done an at-home job, you’ll always want your skin to remain sun-kissed for as long as possible…
HOW TO MAINTAIN A FAKE TAN FOR LONGER
TIP #1: always exfoliate before application.
We know you know this, but it is the key to a long-lasting tan. One of the main reasons your faux tan fades so fast is because your dead skin cells shed soon after application, taking your tan with it. By scrubbing your entire bod (and paying special attention to your ankles, knees and elbows), you’re getting rid of any loose layers of skin currently hanging around and slowing down how soon your skin will shed in the process. Try: Naked Tan Walnut Body Polish
TIP #2: use a faux bronzing product that can be layered.
Mousses are brilliant for this as they settle into the skin a whole lot quicker than, say, the cream varieties. Do one full body application and let it dry for 10 minutes, before following up with another one. This will give you a deeper tan; one that will also last longer. Apply another layer 24 hours later and you’ll be a sun-kissed babe for many, many days. Promise. Try: Naked Tan Instant Self Tan Bronzing Mousse
TIP #3: always wash your fake-tanned body wisely.
You know how harsh, sulphate-packed shampoos can strip your hair of its colour? The same goes for body washes. Using a tan-loving body cleanser means you’ll still feel (and smell!) clean, but you won’t end up washing your faux tan down the drain. Try: Naked Tan Body Cleanser
TIP #4: moisturise, moisturise, moisturise.
And then moisturise some more while you’re at it. Dry skin makes for a patchy, short-term tan, and it also makes it difficult for you to remove said tan when you want to start afresh. Tanning formulas also dehydrate the skin, so you’ll always find your skin craving a hydration boost in the days following an application of faux tan. Drinking lots of water is also a wonderful idea to help hydrate from the inside out. Try: Naked Tan Crème de la Crème
TIP #5: feel free to enhance your tan using shimmer products.
Doing so will not only make your legs looking ridiculously healthy and moisturised, but it will also disguise any patchy areas or fading tan. The hit of hydration will also ward off any dry patches, which we know are a fake tan’s number one enemy. Try: Naked Tan Goddess Shimmer
TIP #6: avoid jumping in the ocean or a swimming pool.
Boring, yes, but chlorine eats away at your fake tan, as does salt water. So if you want to maintain it, stay away. However, you can also use this to your advantage. Struggling to get rid of the remnants of a fading tan? A swim in the old swimming pool followed by a scrub down in the shower will leave your skin fresh and clean and ready for another round of faux bronzing. Smart.
