Can apple cider vinegar really help you lose weight?
We’ve had our fair share of tips when it comes to weight loss, including which foods might help you lose weight. One piece of advice claims apple cider vinegar is a weight loss powerhouse. We’ve heard it assists with appetite control and shifting a few kilos, as well as help with detoxification, digestion and clearing the skin. We spoke to Fernwood Nutritionist, Elita Massarotti, to find out just how effective apple cider vinegar is for weight loss and the different ways it can be used from day to day. Do you recommend apple cider vinegar as a weight loss aid?
As a single ingredient I do not recommend apple cider vinegar as a weight loss aid, it won’t magically help weight fall off. However it is not bad for you and can most definitely be used as part of a healthy balanced diet with lots of other healthy ingredients whether the goal is weight loss or not.

What other natural foods/drinks are known to aid weight loss?
There is not a single ingredient/food/drink [–] weight loss involves dedication, motivation and persistence with a healthy balanced lifestyle. This includes being active and moving every day and eating a balanced diet full of healthy ingredients. This includes a high intake of plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruit, wholegrains (particularly those high in fibre with a low G.I) and legumes. Also include healthy protein sources such as oily fish like salmon, lean meats, eggs and tofu. Add low-fat dairy such as milk, yoghurt and cheese and also healthy fats that come from extra virgin olive oil, avocadoes, nuts such as walnuts and almonds, and oily fishes. Limit foods high in saturated fats, trans fats, sugar and salt (which means limiting highly processed foods). And don’t forget to have a good intake of water.
What are your top three tips for losing weight?
- Preparation is key – go shopping weekly to stock up your home and even your workplace with healthy foods. Plan meals and snacks ahead of time and make sure you always have healthy snacks on hand for when you are in a rush.
- Simply eat well.Move every day – keep active. Every little bit helps.
- Hold yourself accountable and don’t give up – let go of excuses and fears and stop blaming everything else. Be persistent but also be kind to yourself.
