How much water do we really need to drink?

Did you know 55-65 per cent of your body weight is made up of water? And that your brain consists of around 70 per cent of water, too? Crazy, huh? Yep, suddenly the need for adequate daily water intake seems to make a whole lot of sense…
But how much water does one actually need to drink each day? I mean, the old eight glasses a day line has been thrown around for years, but what’s right for you?
Enter the hydration calculator. It’s not actually a physical calculator, more like a nifty mathematic equation that allows you to work out how much of the clear stuff you should be aiming to drink each day. It’s based on your weight, so it’s tailored to your body’s specific needs, and is actually rather simple to work out.
How to work out your ideal hydration calculation:
Your weight in kg divided by 0.024 = how many millilitres of water your body requires each day.
So, if you were to weigh 60kg, an ideal daily water intake for you is 2,500mL or 2.5L. If you weigh 75kg, you’ll need 3,125mL or 3.125L. The maths is simple, really, and is outstanding at deciphering exactly how much your body needs.
Not convinced you need to take in that much water each day? You do. Seriously. A hydrated body is able to transport chemical messages, hormones, nutrients and oxygen to your organs more efficiently, which in turn allows said organs to do their job properly. It also boosts proper cell production, making way for a healthier you. Water cleanses toxins from your body, too, and plays a crucial role in helping your kidneys rid your body of waste through urination.
And before you reach for that diet coke… It’s worth noting dehydrating beverages (read: soft drink and coffee) do not count towards your daily water intake, as they actually strip your system of water. Non-caffeinated teas and fruit juices do count, though, so feel free to include them in your daily tally if you’re struggling with plain water. And if you’re a regular exerciser, you’ll need to up your intake on those days that you pound the pavement to compensate for water loss through sweating. But you already knew that, right?
Oh, and yes, sipping regularly on water during the day will promote glowy, healthy skin, but this doesn’t mean you can scrimp on your skin care routine. A decent twice daily cleanse will ensure all impurities and toxins are removed on the outside, too (we love Clearasil Daily Clear Vitamins & Extracts Wash and Scrub), while nourishing serums and moisturisers will also ensure your complexion stays hydrated and plump.
How much water do you drink each day? According to your personalised hydration calculation, are you getting enough? Do you have any tips for increasing your water intake?

I used to drink nowhere near enough, but in the past years I’ve really made an effort, and now it is automatic for me.

CORRECTION multiply your body weight by 0.024 (or up to 0.032) do not divide. To check your answer you can multiply your body weight by 24 (or up to32 (ml)) and then divide the answer by 1000 to get to litres.
I.e. 60kg X 0.024L = L
(60kg X 24ml) /1000 = L

I have been more conscious of noting how much I drink and I am not too bad when it comes to how much I am drinking. I thought that I drank too little but doing the maths helped.
Also to note, all liquids count, even the tea's and fizzies and they are not as diuretic as to make you loose as much as you put in and the liquids in your fruits and vegetables count as well as those foods have a high water content.

Thanks for the calculations on weight to identify how much water we need each day. Of course, there are variables depending on our activity too. I think I meet my weight ratio requirements.

Caffeine is mildly diuretic, but it is not dehydrating! I did the maths & I drink way MORE!

I didn’t think I was drinking enough. It’s something I’m always conscious of. I try to get through 4 ish bottles per day. The bottles are 600ml, which makes 2.4l. So that should be enough for me. I always know when I haven’t had enough because I feel so flat and lethargic.

I do drink a lot of water but 3L seems an awful lot. I should measure how much I drink and see how close I come.

I drink 2 very large glasses at the least each day, I don't really like water but force myself to do this .Sometimes I just sip from the glass or drink the whole thing in one go.

I have never heard of this calculation before - only the 8 glasses per day.
The calculation makes more sense as we all vary in size and 8 glasses would not suit everyones needs but advertising the average of 8 glasses is probably better than a calculation which most people would forget.
I for one do not get the recommended about of water in my diet. It is so hard but that is just my excuse. Thankfully I am not a fan of fizzy drinks.

Much easier to drink from a bottle than from a glass. Less refill needed to.

I drink heaps of water most days, prob about 2.5-3 litres, and notice it when I don't. I haven't weighed myself in a long time, I might need more not sure, hope not! I never drink soft drinks or any sugary drinks. Thankfully I've never actually liked them!

The maths for calculating how much water should be consumed is really handy, thank you. Most articles that I read about this topic does not include the calculation and just mentions that at last 8 glasses of water should be consumed and it feels like a blanket recommendation for everyone, irrespective of weight.

Thank you for this information! I thought that I was drinking enough water, but now I'll have to find ways to increase my consumption of it.
